BIST 100 index rises nearly 1,900 points from previous close, Turkish lira gains ground

Turkish stocks surge 1.94% at midweek close

ANKARA

Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the day up 1.94% to close at 99,785.16 points on Wednesday.

Starting the day at 98,799.33 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index rose 1,898.8 points from 97,886.36 points at Tuesday's close.

During midweek trading, the BIST 100 hovered between 98,637.16 points and 99,850.99 points -- 91 stocks on the index rose, 6 fell and three flat compared to the previous close.

Closing the day with a market value of nearly 673.6 billion Turkish liras ($115.5 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 8 billion Turkish liras ($1.4 billion).

By market capitalization, Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding, private lenders Garanti BBVA and Akbank were the top companies of BIST 100.

Shares of national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, Garanti BBVA, and Akbank posted the highest trading volumes. 

Shares of diesel engine and tractor manufacturer Tumosan Motor (TMSN) performed the best, rising 8.13%, as stocks of energy and mining company Park Elektrik (PRKME) did the worst with a 2.54% drop.

An ounce of gold sold for $1,490.00 at the daily close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,486.40 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil was $60.28 per barrel as of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT) on Wednesday -- with a day range of $58.86 to $60.38.
