ISTANBUL

The number of passengers on flights in Istanbul airports this January-August exceeded Türkiye’s population at 86.4 million, up 6% on an annual basis, according to State Airports Authority General Directorate (DHMI) data.

IGA Istanbul Airport welcomed 55.2 million passengers in the first eight months of the year, 11.8 million of them traveling on domestic routes and 43.4 million on international routes, altogether up 3% year-on-year.

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Anatolian side hosted a total of 31.2 million passengers in January-August, 13.8 million on domestic routes and 17.3 million on international routes, with a rise of 13.4% on an annual basis.

Türkiye’s total population stood at 85.8 million as of July 1, according to the country’s statistical agency TurkStat.

Meanwhile, Istanbul’s airports operated a total of 559,811 flights in January-August, up 7%, the data showed.

The number of flights at IGA Istanbul Airport was 82,933 on domestic routes and 279,136 on international routes, a total of 346,644 flights — up 4.4%.

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport operated a total of 178,296 flights, 75,742 of them domestic and 102,554 international, marking an 11% increase.

Istanbul Ataturk Airport, an executive air hub, hosted 10,863 domestic and 8,583 international flights in eight months, a total of 19,446 flights, up 4%.
