Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Mexico City later this week to deepen bilateral ties with Mexico and "reinforce North American prosperity," his office said on Tuesday.

Carney is scheduled to visit Mexico on Sept. 18-19, where he will meet Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum to focus on "security, infrastructure, investment, energy, and trade," a Prime Minister's Office statement said.

Underlining that the meeting between the two leaders aims to "elevate and broaden the bilateral relationship," the statement said. "This visit will further strengthen our relationship and deliver greater prosperity and security for our workers and businesses."

"Canada's new government is diversifying and strengthening its trade relationships with reliable partners to create high-paying careers, grow our industries, secure new markets, and build more resilient supply chains," it added.

Carney hailed the "strong" ties between Canada and Mexico and affirmed that "together, we will build stronger supply chains, create new opportunities for workers, and deliver greater prosperity and certainty for both Canadians and Mexicans."

Both North American countries have faced pressure from US President Donald Trump, amid threats of tariffs, which have prompted Mexico and Canada to deepen their bilateral ties.

On Aug. 5, Sheinbaum met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Minister of Finance and National Revenue Francois-Philippe Champagne in Mexico City.

Sheinbaum also previously expressed willingness to broaden trade and direct investment between Mexico and Canada.
