Brazil's unemployment rises to 7.9% in January-March period

ISTANBUL

Brazil's unemployment rate rose to 7.9% in the January-March period, according to data released Tuesday by the Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The figure is a 0.5 percentage point increase from the preceding three-month period when it stood at 7.4% during the October-December of last year.

The unemployed population stood at 8.6 million in the first quarter of 2024, which is an increase of 542,000 people from the fourth quarter of 2023.

On an annual basis, however, the latest figure of 7.9% in the January-March period is a decline of 0.9 percentage point from the same period of 2023.
