Crown jewels dating back to the early 1600s were stolen from a cathedral in southwest Sweden, according to a police officer on Wednesday.

Two thieves took away two crowns used by 17th century King Karl IX and Queen Kristina as well as a royal orb from Strangnas Cathedral, Thomas Agnevik, a police spokesman said.

The thieves fled the scene by a motorboat and police teams backed by helicopters are now hunting for them, Agnevik said.

No arrests have been made so far.

The cathedral was open to the public when the priceless jewels were stolen, according to the eyewitnesses.
