Spanish flamenco guitarist, Poco de Lucia, has died of a heart attack at the age of 66 in Mexico on Wednesday, while playing with his children on a beach in Mexico’s Cancun region.
The mayor’s office in Spain’s southern province of Algeciras, where he was born, announced the death and proclaimed two days of official mourning.
Famous for merging flamenco rhythms with other musical styles such as jazz, blues and rock, the guitarist, whose real name was Francisco Sanchez Gomez, also worked on the Bafta award-winning 1983 version of Carmen.
Awarded a best Album Grammy in 2004, he won many other Spanish and many other prizes. He played in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013.
Some of his studio albums are “Dos Guitarras Flamencas en Stereo”, “Canciones Andaluzas para 2 Guitarras”, “El Mundo del Flamenco” and “Almoraima”.
