Taiwan has recorded seven severe cases of infant enterovirus so far this year, the highest in six years, with five of the cases resulting in death, Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said on Tuesday.

Two newborns died last week from complications related to the virus, and another infant is currently in intensive care in serious condition, Focus Taiwan reported, citing the CDC.

According to CDC physician Lin Yung-ching, one baby began showing symptoms at six days old and later died of fulminant hepatitis, septic shock, and multiple organ failure.

The second infant developed symptoms at three days old and died from septic shock, meningitis, and multiple organ failure.

The latest case involves a baby boy whose condition remains unstable in intensive care.

CDC spokesperson Lo Yi-chun said the spike marks the most serious outbreak among infants in six years. Enterovirus activity typically continues through the end of July, and Lo urged pregnant women and newborn caregivers to take extra precautions.

Last week, 6,009 people sought medical attention for enterovirus-related illnesses, up 14% from 5,257 the week before. Despite the increase, authorities said the overall infection rate remains below epidemic levels.

Kuo Hung-wei, director of the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Center, said officials are closely monitoring the trend.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, non-polio enteroviruses are common viruses that primarily affect infants and children. While most cases are mild, some can lead to severe complications, especially in newborns.
