Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday urged global action to oppose Israeli atrocities in Gaza during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s “consistent commitment not only through strong statements on the international stage, but also by working closely with regional and global leaders,” according to statement on his X account.

Stressing the dire humanitarian conditions amid Israel’s brutal offensive and siege in Gaza, Anwar said the “world must not remain silent in the face of such grave violations of humanity.”

For his part, President Masoud Pezeshkian urged Islamic countries to “increase diplomatic pressure” and “act unitedly” to put an end to “ongoing Israeli crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”

“The atrocities committed by the Zionist regime in Gaza are unacceptable to any free-thinking human being,” Pezeshkian said, according to his office.

“I hope that Islamic countries will stop these atrocities through active diplomacy and diplomatic pressure, and act with unity and responsibility,” he added.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral relations, and agreed to further enhance the friendly ties in various areas of mutual benefit.

Israel has killed more than 61,000 people in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine.
