Lawmaker urges Australia to ban dual citizens from joining Israeli forces amid genocide in Gaza
Ed Husic tells parliament some dual citizens had already left Australia to join Israeli forces, 'prompting concern in civil society'

Australia's ruling party lawmaker Ed Husic has called on his government to ban Israeli-Australian dual citizens from joining the Israeli forces amid ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Husic, a Labor Party lawmaker, in his parliament speech Wednesday night, called on his government to urge Israeli-Australians against accepting a call-up to fight in the Israeli forces, saying: "We should be sending a clear message: 'Please don't join'."
It is important for the parliament to note that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) believes it's plausible that the acts of the Benjamin Netanyahu government in Gaza could amount to genocide, Husic reminded the government led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The Netanyahu government, he went on to say, is planning to seize and control the entire Gaza city. It is mobilizing recruits to join the Israeli forces, which is facing resistance from within Israel itself.
"In these circumstances, it's not unrealistic to expect that the dual nationals from our country may be called to serve in the IDF," he said, urging the government to reform laws to ban dual citizens from fighting for foreign forces.
He said some dual citizens had already left Australia to join the Israeli forces, "prompting concern in civil society," he warned.
"We should be sending a clear message: Please don't join. We don't need Australians to be placed in a situation where they witness, abet and participate in what will likely be deemed a genocide," Husic said, stressing Australia should take steps to prevent genocide.
Israel has killed nearly 64,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
