TUBAN, Indonesia

Police arrested 141 men during a raid at an entertainment venue in the capital, Jakarta, over the weekend for violating the country’s law on pornography by attending a “gay party”, according to a police official on Monday.

It is not illegal to be a homosexual in Indonesia -- the world’s largest Muslim country in terms of population. However, the LGBT community has increasingly come under pressure over the months following controversial anti-gay comments by government officials and some religious organizations.

Ten performers and the owner of the gym and sauna building where the raid was carried out in West Jakarta were among those held.

Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono told Anadolu Agency that police crashed the party that was being held under the title "The Wild One" on Sunday night.

"In the raid, we arrested 141 men suspected of violating the law on pornography," Yuwono said.

The Indonesian Ulema Council on Monday condemned the so-called gay party for allegedly tarnishing the country's main religion and culture.

"It desecrated and went against the values of our religion and the culture of a nation that has noble moral values," the council’s Commission of Law Chairman Muhammad Baharun told Anadolu Agency.

Civil rights organizations fighting for the abolition of violence against minority groups condemned the arrests, saying the raid had set a bad precedent on rights for gender and sexual minority groups.

Pratiwi Febry from the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute urged police to not release any personal information of the suspects to the public since it could endanger their lives.

"If they are found not guilty, please immediately release them and restore their good name," Febry said.

Last week, a Sharia court in Aceh province had sentenced two gay suspects with public flogging.
