India, US 'actively' engaged in trade talks, says envoy to New Delhi
New Delhi, Washington set to hold fresh trade talks on Tuesday, says US Ambassador Sergio Gor
NEW DELHI
India and the US continue to “actively engage” in trade talks, the new US ambassador to New Delhi said Monday.
“Many of you have asked me for an update on the ongoing trade deal negotiations. Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow,” Sergio Gor said in New Delhi after taking his new post.
He added: “India is the world's largest nation … It's not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there and while trade is very important for our relationship.”
The current trade talks come after New Delhi and Washington last year failed to conclude a trade deal, prompting the Trump administration to impose higher tariffs on Indian goods.
The Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on Indian imports, partly over India’s continued purchases of Russian oil amid the war in Ukraine.
Trade talks between the two sides resumed last September after US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch met Indian officials in New Delhi.
A proposed deal was delayed because Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not telephone US President Donald Trump, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, a claim rejected by New Delhi.
