NEW DELHI

India on Sunday called for dialogue, a day after the US captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a military operation in Caracas, with New Delhi dubbing the developments as a "matter of deep concern."

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” an Indian External Affairs Ministry statement said.

New Delhi said it reaffirms “its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela,” and “we call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region.”

On Saturday, Venezuela’s government accused the US of attacking civilian and military installations in multiple states and declared ‌a national ‌emergency.

US President Donald Trump later confirmed the "large-scale" strike, adding that President Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been "captured and flown out of the country."

The attacks came after months of growing US pressure on Maduro, who Washington accuses of being involved in drug trafficking. The Venezuelan leader had denied the claims and expressed readiness for talks.

In a joint statement, several left-wing parties in India said they “strongly denounce and condemn” the US "aggression against Venezuela and the kidnapping" of Maduro and his wife.

“This is an attack carried out against a sovereign nation in blatant violation of the UN Charter,” the statement said.
