Incidents of violence continue in troubled Indian state of Manipur, says army chief
Army chief says ‘synergized efforts’ with government initiatives ‘brought situation under control’ in northeastern state which has seen violence since 2023

ISTANBUL
The incidents of violence continue in India's northeastern state of Manipur, the Indian army chief said on Monday, days after the top regional official tendered an apology over deaths and damages in the past two years.
In Manipur, “synergized efforts of security forces and proactive government initiatives have brought the situation under control,” Gen. Upendra Dwivedi told reporters during his annual news conference in New Delhi.
“However, cyclic incidents of violence continue,” he added. “We are working to establish peace in the region. Various NGOs and our (military) veterans are reaching out to the community leaders to give effect to a kind of a reconciliation.” Dwivedi said, according to a video record of the news conference.
Manipur has been witnessing violence since ethnic fighting broke out in Manipur in May 2023, which resulted in the killing of over 250 people and affected thousands of others.
The region’s top elected official last month tendered an apology over deaths during the ethnic clashes, the first such instance since tensions erupted in the northeastern region in May 2023 that claimed over 250 lives.
“This entire year has been very unfortunate. I feel regret and I want to say sorry to the people of the state for what has been happening till today, since last May 3,” Chief Minister N. Biren Singh told reporters in the state's Imphal city, saying that he “would like to apologize.”
Fighting has taken place between members of the majority Meitei and the Kuki tribal communities in the state.
Meitei are mostly Hindu and dominant in the state's population, while Kukis are mostly Christians, and among the most socio-economically disadvantaged groups in India.
