Hundreds of protesters braved the rain as they rallied against Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City on Saturday.
The rally was organized by the recently-created cause-oriented group “Tindig Pilipinas” which launched a nationwide signature drive urging Duterte to sign the bank secrecy waiver to open his and his family’s accounts amidst allegations that he has amassed billions of ill-gotten peso bank deposits.
"We, the Filipino people, call on President Duterte to sign the waiver on the secrecy of bank deposits. We deserve a transparent and accountable leader," the group said in its petition as quoted by GMA News.
Opposition senator Antonio Trillanes IV has alleged that the president has millions of pesos in bank accounts and questioned its source saying he could not accumulate that much because “he was just a mayor of Davao City”.
Trillanes, who joined the protesters, revealed that more than PHP2billion of bank transactions have been posted to Duterte’s accounts from 2006-2015.
He revealed that the campaign to gather signatures would be carried out all over the country to show that the Filipinos demand transparency and accountability.
Duterte has repeatedly denied allegations about his wealth and told the military to remove him from
The protesters also decried the alleged extrajudicial killings and human rights violations resulting from the administration’s brutal drug war.
The rally was attended by former government officials and groups closely linked to former President Benigno Simeon Aquino's allies.
