The death toll from a landfill collapse in the Philippines has risen to eight after two more bodies were recovered, as rescue teams continue searching for dozens of missing people five days after the disaster, local media reported.

According to Cebu City Fire Station, the bodies of two women were pulled from the rubble last night, ABS-CBN reported.

Search operations are still underway for 28 workers believed to be trapped under the debris.

Authorities earlier rescued 12 workers from the collapsed garbage mound and took them to hospitals for treatment.

The incident took place on Thursday at a privately operated landfill facility in Cebu City, located in the Central Visayas region, burying workers who were on site at the time.

Rescue teams continue to use heavy machinery and manual digging as hopes ebb of locating any survivors.
