China records 164 COVID-19 deaths, 2,777 infections in May

Mostly elderly people, individuals with underlying health conditions are victims, says health center

ISTANBUL

China recorded 164 COVID-19 deaths and 2,777 severe cases in May, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Monday.

In a statement, the CDC said most of the deaths occurred among the elderly and individuals with "underlying health conditions."

According to the World Meters website, the total number of COVID-19 cases is about 503,302 in China.

Since December 2019, COVID-19 has caused nearly 7 million deaths worldwide, with 765.2 million confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The US tops the list with 103.2 million cases, followed by India (44.9 million) and France (38.9 million). In terms of deaths, the US leads with 1.1 million deaths, followed by Brazil (701,494) and India (531,564). Other countries with significant death tolls include Russia, Mexico, the UK, Peru, Italy, Germany, and France.
