Cambodian premier, UN chief discuss ongoing ceasefire following Thailand-Cambodia border tensions: Report
Meeting comes after July clashes that left dozens dead, injured

ISTANBUL
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday discussed the ongoing ceasefire following border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, local media reported.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus Summit 2025 in Tianjin, China, Hun Manet said through the US social media company X.
According to a report by the daily Khmer Times, the discussion focused on Cambodia’s active engagement within the UN framework and the ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
Hun Manet reportedly said that Guterres commended Cambodia for its “constructive and active participation” as a UN member state across various areas of cooperation.
He quoted the UN chief as saying that “the Secretary-General (Guterres) has personally and attentively been following the case” and that he “welcomes the ceasefire between Cambodian and Thai forces while encouraging both sides to restore normalcy in their relations as soon as possible.”
The UN leader also urged both countries to avoid using military force in border disputes, especially in civilian areas, and emphasized resolving issues peacefully, including through the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission.
Hun Manet added that Guterres “agreed to call on both parties to avoid the use of military force in resolving unsettled border issues, especially in areas inhabited by civilians, and to resolve disputes peacefully through existing mechanisms such as the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission, based on agreements, treaties, and international law.”
The meeting followed July’s clashes that left dozens dead and injured.
On July 28, during a trilateral meeting with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the two neighbors agreed to an unconditional ceasefire following weeks of hostilities.
Both sides later endorsed a 13-point agreement on Aug. 7, which included allowing ASEAN observers to monitor the ceasefire along the contested border.
