Beijing urges US to uphold one-China principle after Trump signs Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act
Recently passed US law permanently extends requirements for State Department to review and report on its guidance on relations with Taiwan
ISTANBUL
China on Tuesday urged the US to uphold the one-China principle after US President Donald Trump signed the Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act into law, Beijing said.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a news conference in Beijing that China “firmly opposes” Washington’s “official interaction with China’s Taiwan region in any form.”
“The Taiwan question is at the core of China’s foreign interests,” he said, calling it the “first red line that must not be crossed.”
China urged the US “to earnestly uphold the one-China principle and three China-US joint communiques on handling the Taiwan question, stop the official interaction between the United States and Taiwan, and do not send wrong signals to the Taiwan Independent separatist forces,” Lin said.
The new US law permanently extends existing requirements for the State Department to review and report on its guidance to executive branch agencies and offices on relations with Taiwan.
