Beijing says China-EU relations to provide ‘more stability to turbulent world’

China on Monday said that its relations with the EU will provide “more stability to the turbulent world amid tension between the 27-nation bloc and the US, according to the state media.

“Amid the rise of unilateralism and protectionism, and the interweaving of uncertainties and instabilities, the international community yearns for peace and stability more than ever before,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters in the Chinese capital.

The international community also expects “a healthy and stable China-EU relationship more than ever before and hopes that China and the EU will become constructive forces in a changing world more than ever before.”

Beijing’s statement came as tensions between the EU and the Donald Trump administration have seen an uptick over the ongoing war in Ukraine, NATO as well as trade and tech issues.

Noting that 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, Guo said Beijing will work with the bloc to “maintain the partnership orientation, enhance strategic communication and coordinated cooperation, jointly uphold multilateralism, and address global challenges together.”

“We will strive to inject new vitality into China-EU relations and provide more certainty and stability to the turbulent world,” he said.

On the imposition of tariffs by the US, Guo said China has "repeatedly stated its position that there are no winners in trade wars and tariff wars, which will only harm the common interests of people of all countries."

Reacting to US President Donald Trump's claim that the BRICS bloc was "dead," he said the emerging economic bloc was "an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries."

"The BRICS nations advocate openness, inclusiveness, cooperation, and win-win results. They do not engage in camp confrontation or target third parties, but aim to achieve common development and universal prosperity," he added.
