7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off Malaysia
No immediate reports of casualties
ISTANBUL
A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off Malaysia on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake hit about 55 kilometers (34 miles) northwest of Kota Belud in the state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo, according to the USGS.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Malaysia sits outside the Pacific “Ring of Fire” but occasionally experiences tremors from regional seismic activity, particularly from nearby Indonesia and the southern Philippines.
