At least three people were killed in violent protests in Indonesia on Saturday after angry demonstrators set fire to several government buildings in the capital Jakarta following the death of a motorcycle taxi driver hit by a police vehicle, local media reported.

Authorities have also suspended Jakarta's rapid bus transit service after protesters vandalized or set fire to seven bus stations, according to the Jakarta Globe.

TransJakarta spokesperson Ayu Wardhani said the service was suspended due to safety concerns following the destruction of public transportation infrastructure.

“This morning, all TransJakarta services remain suspended. We continue to monitor the situation to ensure the security of routes and facilities,” she said.

The seven stations damaged during the violent protest are Polda Metro Jaya, Senen Toyota Rangga, Sentral Senen, Senayan BDKI, Gerbang Pemuda, Bundaran Senayan, and Pemuda Pramuka.

Protesters also attacked police outposts and set fire to the city's police command headquarters, destroying dozens of vehicles, shattering windows, leveling guard posts, and injuring officers with stones.

They also torched several vehicles with rocks and Molotov cocktails, injuring four people.

"A total of eight people were evacuated by the rescue team after the burning of the Makassar City DPRD Office, three of whom were declared dead, suspected of being trapped inside the room when the fire broke out," local broadcaster Kompas TV quoted Regional Disaster Management Agency acting head M. Fadli as saying.

The unrest was triggered after a 21-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, was killed after being hit by a police armored vehicle on Thursday.

Affan was reportedly completing a food delivery service order when he was caught in the clash following days of violent demonstrations.

Thousands of motorcycle riders, along with rights activists and politicians, attended his burial on Friday.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Friday expressed regret over the incident and ordered an investigation into a police officer who fatally struck Affan with an armored vehicle.

Prabowo said the officers involved must be held accountable, as he was shocked and disappointed by the excessive actions of the officer.

Indonesian police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo also issued an apology to the victim's family and the public and said the incident will be thoroughly investigated.
