VICTIMS OF AUGUST 17, 1999 EARTHQUAKE REMEMBERED
SAKARYA - Memorial services were held in Adapazari, Golcuk, Yalova and Kocaeli on Tuesday to remember those who lost lives and were injured in the August 17 earthquake of 1999.

A slide show was presented in Adapazari about the necessary measures to be taken before and during an earthquake.
Following the slide show, the Governor of Sakarya Mustafa Buyuk said that they remembered the victims of the August 17 earthquake with great respect.
In Kocaeli, a special ceremony was held at the Fleet Command to remember the 420 military personnel killed during the August 17 earthquake.
The Anadolu Agency (AA) opened a photo exhibition in Kocaeli under the title "Kocaeli That Night" and joined in the memorial services to remember the victims of the August 17 earthquake.
The Municipality of Golcuk hosted a panel on earthquakes on Tuesday. Director General of the National Earthquake Watch Center of the Kandilli Observatory Dr. Dogan Kalafat said at the panel that, on the average, 25 earthquakes take place in Turkey daily.
"Every 10 years, Turkey experiences an earthquake bigger than 6.0 on the Richter scale. We have to help the Turkish society become more aware about earthquakes and have an obligation to live in buildings strong enough to survive big earthquakes," Dr. Kalafat said.
In Yalova, hundreds of people gathered at the Earthquake Monument on Tuesday. They left flowers at the Monument in honor of the 2,504 people killed during the August 17 earthquake.
The August 17 earthquake of 1999 killed more than 18,000 and injured over 48,000 people.
The August 17 earthquake was one of the most devastating earthquakes in Turkey's history.
The earthquake registered 7.4 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was Golcuk.
The earthquake collapsed more than 110,000 buildings.
