NEW YORK
The U.N. Security Council has called on the international community to support newly formed Iraqi government in fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant, or ISIL.
The council, chaired by U.S. State Secretary John Kerry, “strongly” condemned ISIL’s terrorist attacks in Friday’s session, and called on member states to "further strengthen and expand support" for the Haider al-Abadi government declared on September 9.
In its "Presidential Statement" adopted on Friday, the 15-member council expressed “deep outrage about Iraqis who have been killed, kidnapped, raped, or tortured by ISIL and also reaffirmed its full support for the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq in assisting the Iraqis and their Government in strengthening democratic institutions.”
Kerry said at the meeting: "The clear need for all of us to come together, to welcome and to support the new inclusive government in Iraq and of course to put an end to ISIL's unfettered barbarity.
"ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. It has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way".
More than 40 countries, including Turkey were represented in the meeting at the ministerial level.
