Ukraine's Donetsk airport seized and flights suspended

DONETSK, Ukraine

Armed pro-Russian separatists seized control of the eastern Donetsk airport, which temporarily suspended the flights at the airport, according to the airport's press office. 

The separatists from the self-declared "Donetsk People's Republic" stormed the airport early Monday demanding the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops there, a statement said, adding that no shots had been fired. 

The statement continued saying that all flights have been suspended since 7am, but would later resume. 

The pro-Russian separatists' seizure came a day after Ukraine’s presidential elections, which has seen Petro Poroshenko claim victory.

Ukraine responds to separatists' airport seizure

Ukraine's army helicopters have launched an air raid on the eastern region’s airport and gunshots have been heard, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent. 

Civilians and reporters evacuated the area around the airport upon the intervention of Ukrainian army following the seizure of the airport by armed pro-Russian separatists.
