During a World Economic Forum panel discussion on Gaza early this year, Erdogan walked off the stage after an angry exchange with Israeli President Simon Peres. Erdogan's remarks as "one minute" at panel moderator in an angry tone had become iconic in Turkey and in Muslim world.
Turkish businessman Uzeyir Tari and his Jewish partner Eliyahu Nurieli have seen it as a chance and decided to use the phrase for commercial purposes.
"When I suggested to name our new cafe as 'One Minute Cafe', my partner really liked it," Tari said.
"After Mr. Erdogan lashed out at Israeli President, one of our customers, who was a Bangladeshi, expressed his pleasure over Erdogan's attitude," he said. "And we started to sell more when Mr. Erdogan's remarks had repercussions worldwide."
Tari said he also faced something interesting just the day after he made a contract with the owner of the place where he opened his cafe.
"The landlord is a Jewish too. He wanted to terminate our contract and offered big money. But we did not accept his offer," Tari said.
Tari runs another cafe, "The Istanbul Cafe", in Manhattan. But he says One Minute Cafe has been a good commercial investment and his partner and he planned to open two more One Minute cafes in New York.
"We are looking for a place to rent in Times Square," Tari said. Anadolu Agency website contains only a portion of the news stories offered to subscribers in the AA News Broadcasting System (HAS), and in summarized form. Please contact us for subscription options.
