TURKEY WINS NINE MEDALS AT UNIVERSIADE
BELGRADE - Turkey won nine medals at universiade in Serbian capital of Belgrade on Sunday.
Turkish athletes won two gold, two silver and five bronze medals at the
25th Summer Universiade that ended in Belgrade, Serbia on Sunday.
Turkey's one silver and three bronze medals came from taekwondo, whereas Turkey won the other two gold, one silver and one bronze medals from athletics and one bronze from judo.
The universiade began in Belgrade on June 30 with participation of almost 9,000 athletes from 140 countries.
Russia was ranked the first in medal standings after it won 75 medals. China was the second with 56 medals, and South Korea was the third with 47 medals.
Turkey was ranked the 23rd together with South Africa.
The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games.
The Summer Universiade consists of 10 compulsory sports and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The ten compulsory sports are athletics, basketball, fencing, football, gymnastics, swimming, diving, water polo, tennis, and volleyball.
