HAGUE

The International Criminal Court sentenced Congolese militia leader Germain Katanga to 12 years in prison for war crimes Friday.

In March, the Hague-based court convicted 35-year-old Katanga of crimes against humanity for his role in the 2003 massacre in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Bogoro village, in which 300 people were killed.

Katanga is also accused of sexual violence and rape as well as forcing children into the military.

Also known by his code name, ‘Simba’, Katanga has already spent six years in Scheveningen prison, which will be deducted from his 12-year sentence. He has always denied the accusations against him.

Katanga was caught in 2005 by Congolese authorities, who then delivered him to the International Criminal Court.
