ANKARA - The rate of poverty in Turkey dropped by 0.68 percent over 2007 and became 17.11 percent according to results of the 2008 poverty study.

11.9 MILLION POOR PEOPLE IN TURKEY

Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) in its poverty study for 2008, said, "in 2008, 0.54 percent of Turkey population which means approximately 374 thousand individuals living below the food poverty line and 17.11 percent of Turkey population which means 11 933 thousand individuals living below the complete poverty line that covers food and non-food expenditure. There isn't any people whose daily expenditure per capita is below 1 USD but the ratio of individuals who live below the poverty line that daily expenditure per capita is below 2,15 USD was estimated as 0.47 percent, 4.3 USD was estimated as 6,.83 percent due to purchasing power parity.
The ratio of individuals who live below the food poverty line which was 0.48 percent in 2007 increased to 0.54 percent in 2008. In response to the ratio of individuals who live below the complete poverty line decreased to 17.11 percent in 2008 from 17.79 percent in 2007.
In 2008, the monthly food poverty line is estimated 275 new Turkish Lira (TRY), whereas the monthly complete poverty line is 767 TRY for 4-person household.
The ratio of individuals who live in rural areas and below the complete poverty line which was 34.80 percent in 2007 decreased to 34.62 percent in 2008; the ratio of individuals who live in urban areas.
While the poverty rate for regular workers is 5.93 percent, it is 28.56 percent for casual workers and 1.87 percent for employers, 24.10 percent for persons work as self employed and 32.03 percent for persons work as an unpaid family worker in 2008.
Agriculture has the highest poverty rate among all sectors. While the poverty rate among the people who work in agricultural sector is 37.97 percent in 2008, it was realized as 32.05 percent in 2007. The poverty rate among the people employed in industry sector has been calculated as 9.71 percent and poverty rate for people employed in service sector has been calculated as 6.82 percent in 2008. In 2008 poverty rates are 13.73 percent and 17.78 percent for economically inactive people and for unemployed persons respectively.
The higher is the education level, the lower is the poverty risk.
The poverty rate is 39.59 percent among the illiterate, 13.44 percent among the elementary graduate, 5.64 percent among the high school and equivalent professional school graduate and 0.71 percent among the two-year faculty, faculty and upper graduate. The poverty risk for preschool children younger than 6 years is 22.53 percent.
