The Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN) Thursday condemned a police raid on Anadolu Agency’s Cairo bureau and detention of staff members.

“AMAN condemns such actions against the press and in this case against Anadolu staff members in Cairo,” the alliance said in a statement.

“AMAN stands with its member-agency and demands from the Egyptian Authorities the immediate release of Anadolu’s Cairo staff members, clearing the reasons of this raid,” it added.

Egyptian police raided the Cairo bureau of Anadolu Agency late Tuesday and detained four employees.

The staff members, including one Turkish citizen, were taken to an unknown location.

No reason was given for the raid.

Turkey strongly condemned the move and called for immediate release of Anadolu Agency staff members.
