US president unveils 'Trump Accounts' program with $1,000 investment for newborns

WASHINGTON

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a proposal aimed at giving newborn Americans a financial head start, saying the initiative would provide children with an early stake in the nation’s economic future.

"For the first time ever, we're going to give every newborn American child a financial stake in the future, a head start at life, and a fair shot at the American Dream," Trump said at a summit to launch "Trump Accounts," which include an initial $1,000 government investment for eligible children born between 2025 and 2028.

Trump said the program is designed to help children who might otherwise begin life with little or no financial resources, arguing that the accounts could grow substantially.

"We're going to put $3T-$4T of wealth into the hands of young Americans who otherwise would have really started out with nothing," he said.

Trump said he believes the accounts will be remembered as "one of the most transformative policy" innovations of all time.

He framed the initiative as a break from past administrations’ fiscal legacies.

"Every president in modern history has left our children with nothing but debt. But under this administration, we're going to leave every child with real assets and a shot at financial freedom," he added.
