HAMILTON, Canada

A US judge on Saturday ordered the release of 5-year-old child Liam Conejo Ramos, and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Ramos, with media reports on Sunday showing them boarding a plane back to Minnesota.

According to a CNN report, a federal judge ordered the child and his father to be released "as soon as practicable."

The 5-year-old child was removed from the family's car in front of their home last week by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and was then transported to an immigration facility in Texas with his father.

A statement by the family's lawyers said they are "working closely" with the family to ensure their "safe and timely reunion" with their loved ones.

"We are pleased that the family will now be able to focus on being together and finding some peace after this traumatic ordeal," the statement said.

A report by ABC News showed Liam and his father boarding a plane on Sunday, as the father told the broadcaster that he is "happy to finally be going home."

Ramos's detention was not the only case of ICE agents detaining students in the Minneapolis area. School officials said three other students were taken by federal agents last week, including a 17-year-old Columbia Heights High School student who was on the way to school.

Protests against ICE operations and federal shootings have taken place for more than a month in Minneapolis and St. Paul, with demonstrations escalating following the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, by immigration officers Saturday, and the Jan. 7 killing of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three.

The Pretti shooting heightened existing tensions as local and state leaders demanded independent investigations and questioned federal cooperation with authorities.
