Trump company files to trademark name for airports as Florida weighs renaming

A company associated with President Donald Trump has filed trademark applications seeking to use his name for airports, as Florida lawmakers weigh renaming Palm Beach International Airport in his honor, according to reports Wednesday.

Public records show DTTM Operations, affiliated with the Trump Organization, filed applications Feb. 13 for “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” and “Donald J. Trump International Airport,” ABC News reported.

Trump Organization spokesperson Kimberly Banza told ABC News the filings are meant to prevent “bad actors” from misusing the name. She said neither Trump nor his family would receive royalties, licensing fees or other financial compensation from any airport renaming.

Critics questioned the move, saying it raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest while Trump remains in office.

Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette of the Project on Government Oversight said, according to ABC News, that the president should be subject to conflict-of-interest laws to ensure decisions are made in the public interest.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben wrote on his blog, also cited by ABC News, that while airports have been named after former presidents, a sitting president’s private company seeking trademark rights in advance would be “unprecedented.”

The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature advanced a proposal earlier this week to rename Palm Beach International Airport after Trump.
