Agent suffers non-life-threatening injury in accidental discharge, Secret Service says
WASHINGTON
A United States Secret Service agent assigned to former first lady Jill Biden’s protective detail accidentally shot himself at Philadelphia International Airport on Friday morning, the agency confirmed to Anadolu.
“An on-duty US Secret Service special agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury from a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon,” spokesperson Nate Herring said in a statement.
The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. during a protective assignment, the agency said, adding that the protectee was not present and there was no impact on movements.
No other individuals were injured, and the agent was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in stable condition, according to the statement.
The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will review the circumstances of the incident, it added.
An official familiar with the incident told Anadolu that the former first lady was at the airport at the time of the shooting, but was not anywhere nearby when it took place.
