Retired US Supreme Court Justice David Souter dies at 85
'He brought uncommon wisdom and kindness to a lifetime of public service,' says Chief Justice Roberts

The retired US Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter died at the age of 85 at his home in New Hampshire, the court announced on Friday.
The statement noted that Scouter was appointed by former President George H.W. Bush in 1990 and served on the Supreme Court for more than 19 years, retiring in 2009. He continued to contribute to the judiciary by serving on the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit for over a decade.
Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. paid tribute to Souter's service in a statement, saying: "Justice David Souter served our Court with great distinction for nearly twenty years. He brought uncommon wisdom and kindness to a lifetime of public service."
Souter was born on September 17, 1939, in Melrose, Massachusetts, and received degrees from Harvard University and Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. After receiving his LL.B. from Harvard Law School, he began his public service career in New Hampshire.
Before being appointed to the US Court of Appeals in 1990, Souter was the Attorney General of New Hampshire and held various state judicial positions.
