WASHINGTON

Mexico will deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet of water per year to the US, officials said Tuesday.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a statement that they welcomed a new commitment between the US and Mexico that strengthens the implementation of the 1944 Water Treaty.

"Under the negotiated outcome, Mexico committed to deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet‑ of water per year to the United States during the current five-year cycle, providing stability for agricultural producers and rural communities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley," according to the statement.

The announcement follows a call last week between US President Donald Trump and his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, during which both reaffirmed a commitment to resolving longstanding water management challenges.

Rubio said the commitment was a "win" for American farmers and ranchers, adding the US appreciates Sheinbaum's "consistent efforts" to uphold Mexico’s responsibilities under the 1944 Water Treaty.

According to the statement, the US and Mexico will hold monthly meetings to ensure timely and consistent deliveries.
