Local government mulls protest after US military parachute 'falls onto children's center' in Tokyo
No injuries reported in Japanese capital
ISTANBUL
A local government in Tokyo is considering filing a protest with the US military and the Japanese government after a US military parachute reportedly “fell onto the grounds of a children’s center” in the Japanese capital near an air base, officials said on Tuesday.
The parachute was used by US military personnel during a training exercise at Yokota Air Base on Nov. 20, according to Kyodo News.
No injuries were reported among residents.
The Fussa municipal government and the Defense Ministry’s North Kanto Defense Bureau said strong winds blew both the main parachute and a pilot chute off course during the exercise by the US.
The main parachute landed on the center’s playground, about 100 meters (328 feet) from the base. US military personnel retrieved it the same night without obtaining city approval. The pilot chute was later found on the center’s rooftop by a staff member on Dec. 1 and subsequently collected by the city.
Japan hosts thousands of US troops as well as multiple military bases and weaponry.
