Half of Americans say US democracy is either 'in trouble' or 'failing'
39% see US democracy as 'in trouble,' while 13% declare nation 'failed democracy'
WASHINGTON
Just over half of Americans age 18 - 29 believe that US democracy is either "in trouble" or "failing," according to a new poll whose results were released on Wednesday.
Of the 52% who hold this belief, 39% view the democracy as being “in trouble," and 13% go so far as to declare the nation a "failed democracy," said the poll by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School, the public policy school of Harvard University.
While 7% of young Americans view the US as a "healthy democracy," 27% described the nation as a "somewhat functioning democracy.”
While Democrats are about evenly divided about the health of the US democracy (44% healthy/somewhat functioning and 45% in trouble/failed), a large majority of Republicans, 70%, see it as either a democracy in trouble (47%) or failed (23%).
The poll also found that President Joe Biden's approval rate among young Americans has dropped to 46%.
The poll surveyed 2,109 interviewees between Oct. 26 and Nov. 8.
The margin of error for the total sample is +/- 3.08%.
