HAMILTON, Canada

Former US President Bill Clinton, 78, on Tuesday was discharged from the hospital after being admitted due to a fever, said his deputy chief of staff.

"President Clinton was discharged earlier today after being treated for the flu. He and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and are touched by the kind messages and well wishes he received," Angel Urena said on X.

Urena also conveyed Clinton's "warmest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season to all."

The Democrat served two terms as president, from January 1993 until January 2001.

His wife, Hillary Clinton, later served as secretary of state under President Barack Obama and also made an unsuccessful bid for the US presidency.

Bill and Hillary Clinton remain icons of the Democratic Party, with his presidency seen as one of the high-water marks of the post-Watergate era.
