Death toll rises to 124 in Dominican Republic nightclub roof collapse

BOGOTA, Colombia

At least 124 people were killed and 155 injured when a roof at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic collapsed, officials reported Wednesday.

The victims include provincial governor Nelsy Cruz, renowned merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was performing at the club in Santo Domingo, and two former Major League Baseball players -- Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco. Authorities said Dotel, who played for the New York Mets, was pulled from the debris but died on the way to the hospital.

The son of the public works and communications minister also died in the accident.

The collapse happened early Tuesday during Perez's performance, which began shortly before midnight. The roof gave way almost an hour later.

Videos recorded inside the club show Perez on stage singing as a man who was recording noted that "something fell from the ceiling."

Perez is then seen looking toward the indicated area before a loud noise is heard, and the recording ends.

Authorities are continuing to search for survivors.

Rescue teams from Puerto Rico and Israel joined search efforts Wednesday, according to authorities.

Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the country's emergency operations center, estimated that rescuers had 24 to 36 hours remaining to locate survivors beneath the debris.

The reason for the extensive collapse at the Jet Set nightclub remains undetermined
