BOGOTA, Colombia

Brazilian police raided the home and political headquarters of former President Jair Bolsonaro early Friday.

The raids were conducted to enforce new stringent precautionary measures imposed by the Supreme Court, which is prosecuting Bolsonaro for allegedly plotting a coup. The restrictions include mandatory use of an electronic monitoring anklet and a ban on accessing his social media accounts, according to media reports.

The court's order prohibits Bolsonaro from physically approaching embassies, communicating with foreign diplomats, or contacting others under investigation or facing prosecution in the alleged coup plot. He is also barred from contacting his son, congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, who has been implementing a pressure strategy from the US, a strategy that has recently gained support from US President Donald Trump.

The electronic anklet will allow him some movement, albeit with strict conditions: he must remain at home overnight, from 7 am. to 7 am, and will be under 24-hour surveillance.

The measures build upon existing restrictions, as Bolsonaro's passport was confiscated in 2024.

The judicial decision was issued one day after Trump sent a letter supporting Bolsonaro and demanding that the trial "must end immediately."

Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who presides over the case, reportedly imposed the precautions amidst rumors that Bolsonaro might seek asylum from Trump.

Bolsonaro has consistently denied his involvement in the coup plot, stating Friday that he has never considered leaving Brazil and asserting that the latest legal developments are intended at “supreme humiliation.”

In a post on social media, Eduardo alleged the legal actions were in retaliation for a video his father posted Thursday on social media, thanking Trump for his support.

The far-right leader is on trial for allegedly leading an attempted coup against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a charge that could carry a sentence of more than 40 years in prison.

Bolsonaro is not the only former head of state to face restrictions. Similar measures have been applied to figures like Argentina's Cristina Kirchner and France's Nicolas Sarkozy.
