ISTANBUL

A day after announcing a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the US, President Donald Trump said that he will meet with movie industry movers and that he does not want to harm them, but to help.

“I’m not looking to hurt the industry, I want to help the industry,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday.

Trump said the US movie industry “has been decimated by other countries taking them out, and also by incompetence, like in Los Angeles, the governor is a grossly incompetent man, he’s just allowed it to be taken away from,” referring to California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat and a frequent Trump target.

“Hollywood doesn’t do very much of that business, they have the nice sign” overlooking Hollywood “but they don’t do very much,” Trump claimed.

Saying that financing is being provided by other countries, Trump said: “So we’re going to meet with the industry. I want to make sure they’re happy with it (tariffs) because we’re all about jobs.”

On Sunday Trump announced a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the US.

"I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands," he said on social media.

Trump said the movie industry in America is dying "a very fast death,” adding: "Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States."

Stressing that Hollywood and many other areas in the US are "being devastated," he called this “a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!"

Shares of US media companies such as Netflix and Warner Bros. fell Monday, the first trading day since Trump’s announcement.
