ANKARA

Three French soldiers have died in French Guiana due to an accident while combating in illegal gold mines, said the French Defense Ministry on Thursday.

The soldiers were placing explosives on Wednesday to destroy illegal mining sites in the South American country when they fell victim to toxic fumes, according to preliminary findings.

The statement said five other soldiers also fell ill during the operation and were evacuated to a hospital.

It added that one of the soldiers is in serious condition.
