1 killed, at least 6 injured in shooting at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University
Authorities believe multiple shooters were involved in attack at Lincoln University, one of country’s first historically Black colleges
ISTANBUL
A person was killed and at least six others were injured in a shooting during homecoming celebrations at Lincoln University, one of Pennsylvania’s historically Black colleges, NBC News reported.
The victim was identified as J’Wan Jeffers, 25, of Wilmington, Delaware, who died shortly after midnight from a gunshot wound to the head, Chester County District Attorney Chris de Barrena-Sarobe said at a news conference Sunday.
Authorities said one of the injured individuals is a current Lincoln University student, another is an alumnus, and the remaining victims have no direct affiliation with the school. All are between 20 and 25 years old and are expected to survive.
Officials believe that multiple shooters may have been involved in the attack, which occurred Saturday night near the university’s International Cultural Center after crowds gathered following a homecoming football game.
Police took Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson into custody after he was found carrying a Glock 28 handgun without a license. He was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, but investigators have not confirmed whether the weapon was used in the shooting.
“This mass shooting should never have happened,” de Barrena-Sarobe said, adding that there was no evidence the attackers intended to carry out a mass casualty event.
“Gun violence happens far too often in our country, and we are heartbroken that Lincoln University and its students are among the latest victims of such senseless violence,” the office of President Brenda Allen said in a statement Sunday.
The university announced that classes would be suspended Monday for a day of healing and reflection.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said the state is offering full support to the university and local law enforcement, urging the public to avoid the area and to pray for the Lincoln University community.
The investigation is being carried out by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, including the FBI.
The incident occurred just one day after another shooting near Howard University in Washington, also a historically Black college, where five people were injured, though none were students.
