The Sudanese army said Tuesday it inflicted heavy losses on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the southern city of Babnousa in West Kordofan.

A military statement said that army forces of the 22nd Infantry Division repelled an RSF attack in Babnousa, causing losses on the rebel group in personnel and equipment.

The army said hundreds of RSF militants were killed and combat vehicles were seized and destroyed.

There was no immediate comment from the RSF on the report.

On Monday, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo unilaterally announced a three-month humanitarian truce in Sudan, though his forces continue to carry out numerous abuses against civilians in North Darfur and the three Kordofan states.

On Sunday, the RSF said that its forces were advancing toward Babnousa in an attempt to take control of the city, which has been under siege since January 2024.

Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in a war that regional and international mediations have failed to end. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.
