The South African government has ordered the immediate recall of its ambassador to Israel, Sisa Ngobane, following the fatal violence perpetrated by Israel troops in Palestine.

At least 59 Palestinian demonstrators were martyred Monday -- and thousands more injured -- by Israeli army forces deployed along the Gaza Strip border, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

In a statement on Monday, the South African government condemned the killing of protesters in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has not yet responded in kind. Thousands of Palestinians had gathered on Gaza Strip’s eastern border early Monday morning to take part in protests aimed to commemorate the Nakba anniversary and protest relocating the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The embassy relocation coincides with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s establishment in 1948 -- an event Palestinians refer to as the “Nakba” or the “The Catastrophe”.
