The two houses of the Ethiopian parliament would convene their second special meeting on Thursday to decide on the resignation submitted by President Mulatu Teshome Wirtu.

According to local broadcaster FANA, the House of Peoples’ Representatives and the House of the Federation would accept the resignation and appoint someone else in his place.

With a term of six years, the president has more of a ceremonial role than executive in Ethiopia.

Wirtu has been president since 2015 and is to resign just a year shy from the end of his term. The reason for his resignation is yet to be made clear.
