Democratic Republic of Congo says M23 rebels killed 50 civilians

YAOUNDE, Cameroon

The Democratic Republic of Congo said Thursday that M23 rebels carried out a massacre of civilians in North Kivu province.

Army spokesman General Sylvain Ekenge said the rebels launched an attack in the Rutshuru area, killing 50 civilians and kidnapping many others.

The DR Congo government claims that Rwanda supported the M23, which is feared to capture Goma, the capital of North Kivu.

While Rwanda denies the allegations, political and diplomatic tensions continue between the two countries.
