25 killed when bus carrying mourners overturns in western Kenya
Police say crash among deadliest in 2025

NAIROBI, Kenya
At least 25 people were killed Friday when a 51-seater bus transporting mourners overturned in western Kenya, according to police.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina told reporters that the victims were mourners returning from a funeral when the bus lost control and overturned at a known blackspot, marking one of the region’s deadliest accidents in 2025.
The site, known as the Coptic Roundabout, is in Kisumu County, about 350 kilometers (217 miles) northwest of Nairobi.
Kenya has seen a rise in fatal road accidents this year, with police blaming speeding, reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles for many of the tragedies.
The accident comes one day after a twin tragedy in Kenya’s transport sector, when a light aircraft crashed into residential buildings in central Kenya, killing six. And a train in Naivasha also rammed a staff bus belonging to the Kenya Pipeline Company, killing eight workers.
