DAMASCUS

At least 19 people were killed Friday and dozens of others injured in Syria’s southwestern province of Dara’a in shelling by Assad regime forces, said a Syrian opposition statement.

Syrian Revolution General Commission, or SRGC, stated that Syrian fighter jets dropped barrel bombs on residential areas in Al-Hara district of the opposition-controlled Dara’a city.

The initial death toll was announced as ten, including women and children.

Three children were also among the dead, said the group, adding that the residents are rushing out of the district in large groups to seek refuge from Assad regime's random attacks.

The group also described the assault as a "massacre."

Assad regime forces have been battering Al-Hara and the surrounding strategical areas with heavy weapons after their seizure by opposition forces.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011. The U.N. in August said that more than 191,000 people are believed to have been killed in the conflict so far.
