Around 153 Egyptian policemen were killed in 2014 while fighting crime across the country, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.
"The policemen were killed while fighting criminal and terrorist wrongdoing," ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif told The Anadolu Agency.
Most policemen were killed in bomb blasts that targeted security facilities across Egypt, according to a survey published by the website of state-run daily Al-Akhbar.
It added that some policemen had also been assassinated.
The survey, which covered the period from January 15 to December 28, said that victims had included an assistant interior minister who was shot and killed by unidentified militants on January 28.
Police and army personnel have been the target of repeated attacks for several months now.
The attacks have coincided with a months-long army crackdown on militants in Egypt's northeastern Sinai Peninsula.
